Hypoestes Care Guide

Hypoestes, commonly known as the Polka Dot Plant, is a popular houseplant known for its vibrant and colorful foliage. In this care guide, we will provide you with all the information you need to ensure the health and vitality of your Hypoestes plant.

Lighting:

Hypoestes plants thrive in bright, indirect light. Place your plant near a window where it can receive filtered sunlight throughout the day. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight as it can scorch the leaves.

Temperature:

Maintain a temperature range of 65-75°F (18-24°C) for your Hypoestes plant. It is important to keep the plant away from drafts and extreme temperature fluctuations.

Watering:

Water your Hypoestes plant thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Ensure that the pot has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. Avoid overwatering as it can lead to root rot.

Humidity:

Hypoestes plants prefer high humidity levels. You can increase humidity by placing the plant on a tray filled with water and pebbles or by using a humidifier.

Fertilization:

Feed your Hypoestes plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). Follow the instructions on the fertilizer packaging for proper dosage.

Pruning:

To maintain a compact and bushy shape, regularly pinch back the growing tips of your Hypoestes plant. This will encourage branching and prevent legginess.

Pests:

Monitor your Hypoestes plant for common houseplant pests such as aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites. If you notice any signs of infestation, treat the plant with an appropriate insecticide or one of our at home recipes.  You can find full, detailed pest information on our Pest ID and Treatment pages.

Propagation:

You can propagate your Hypoestes plant through stem cuttings. Take a 3-4 inch cutting from a healthy stem, remove the lower leaves, and place it in a container with moist potting soil. Keep the soil consistently moist until roots develop.

With proper care and attention, your Hypoestes plant will thrive and add a splash of color to your indoor space. Enjoy the beauty of its polka dot-patterned leaves and the joy it brings to your home.
