Nematanthus (Goldfish Plant) Care Guide

Welcome to our Nematanthus care guide! In this guide, we will provide you with all the information you need to successfully care for your Nematanthus plants. Nematanthus, also known as Goldfish plants, are beautiful and unique plants that can add a touch of nature to any space. Let's dive into the care tips!

Light

Nematanthus plants thrive in bright, indirect light. Place your plant near a window where it can receive bright, filtered light throughout the day. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight without a slow and gradual acclimation, as it can scorch the leaves.

Temperature

These plants prefer temperatures between 60°F and 75°F (15°C - 24°C). Avoid exposing them to extreme temperatures or drafts, as it can negatively affect their growth.

Watering

Proper watering is essential for the health of your Nematanthus plant. Water your plant when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Ensure that the pot has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.

Humidity

Nematanthus plants enjoy moderate to high humidity levels. You can increase humidity by placing a tray filled with water near the plant or by using a humidifier. Mist the leaves occasionally to provide additional moisture.

Soil

Use a well-draining potting mix specifically formulated for houseplants. A mix that contains peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite works well for Nematanthus plants. Avoid using heavy soils that retain too much moisture.

Fertilizer

Feed your Nematanthus plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). Follow the instructions on the fertilizer packaging for the correct dosage.

Pruning

Regular pruning helps maintain the shape and health of your Nematanthus plant. Trim back any leggy or overgrown stems to encourage bushier growth. You can also pinch off spent flowers to promote new blooms.

Pests

Keep an eye out for common houseplant pests such as aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites. If you notice any signs of infestation, treat your plant with an appropriate insecticidal soap or one of our at home recipes.  You can find more detailed pest information on our Pest ID and Treatment pages.

Propagation

Nematanthus plants can be propagated through stem cuttings. Take a 4-6 inch cutting from a healthy stem, remove the lower leaves, and place it in a moist potting mix. Keep the cutting warm and humid until roots develop.

With proper care and attention, your Nematanthus plant will thrive and reward you with its vibrant blooms. Enjoy the beauty of nature in your home or office with these stunning plants!
